How did we do in 2019?

2019 was an extremely positive year for Beeken Reeves particularly in regard to developing and expanding our services into additional territories and markets, Director Chris Reeves has provided an overview of the year.


International

From 2015 – 2018 we focused almost solely on recruiting within the UK, with 97% of our 2018 revenue coming from our UK based clients. 2019 saw Beeken Reeves significantly increase the amount of work we completed internationally. This involved working with studios across architecture, design and furniture on many diverse and high-profile assignments. Outside the UK, our largest market has been Australia. We’ve had the pleasure of supporting some fantastic studios in Sydney and Melbourne. It’s also been great to work with a large number of studios in USA, helping them find talent in Los Angeles, New York and Dallas. We’ve also had considerable success supporting numerous clients in France, Canada, Thailand, China and Dubai. As a result, 28% of our revenue in 2019 came from outside the UK, a significant step forward for the business.

 
Architecture

It has been an interesting year working alongside architectural practices in London. Market conditions have increased the pressure on practices and the margin for error when attempting to deliver a profitable project have become increasingly tight. With less visibility on projects and, at times, reduced clarity from clients, it has made planning project resource incredibly difficult. We have continued to support studios with longer term appointments, and critical positions that remain unaffected by project changes, but the majority of work this year has been helping studios to mobilise a project team quickly once a project has landed. We see this continuing to be the case throughout the first half of 2020.

 
Interior Design

Both in the UK and internationally, 2019 was an exciting year for interior design. We’ve been able to support studios in hospitality and residential, with the hospitality market proving very buoyant. With changes taking place in the way hospitality settings are used and viewed, there’s been an increased focus on forward thinking techniques and investment in this space. We have also continued to grow our offering in workplace design, a market that has changed significantly in recent years with the rise of co-working, hot desking and flexible workspaces, this will continue to be growing area to work within.

 
Furniture

2019 was a fantastic year for our furniture team. After flying out to Milan Design Week to network with dealers, manufacturers and agents, we have been able to successfully support a range of companies in London with strategic appointments. We’re delighted with the client base we’ve generated and have had the pleasure of working alongside some exceptional brands. We’ve also helped two high quality international manufacturers establish a physical presence in London. Continuing to provide a high level of service across our furniture clients will be a priority in 2020, and we’ll be sure to make regular trips to industry events and clients in Milan and Stockholm.

 
Senior Appointments

Supporting studios with hard to fill strategic roles has been the foundation of our business since 2015. In 2019, we continued to make a positive impact by helping studios acquire talent at Associate Director, Director and Partner level. In line with our international growth we’ve placed numerous candidates at a Regional Principal level outside the UK.

 
Office Move

Since founding the business in 2015, Beeken Reeves have always been located at our head office in South Kensington, however, from February 2020 we’ll be moving to a brilliant new office in Victoria. This is a significant upgrade to our facilities (everyone’s looking forward to the gym and roof terrace!). It’s also much better situated for our clients and candidates, so we look forward to inviting many of you over in the coming months.

 
2020

2020 will be an incredibly exciting year for the business. Alongside our office move, we have a number of incredibly interesting projects underway. We’ll be visiting MIPIM and Milan again, and will also be attending the Stockholm Furniture Fair, giving us a chance to meet both existing and new clients and candidates. From a recruitment point of view, 2020 will present both opportunities and challenges. The UK’s departure from the EU will bring an end to two years of uncertainty, and hopefully present studios with clarity to enable hiring decisions. The scheduled changes to IR35 in April will also mean that studios will have to look closely at the way they engage with and employ contract staff. This is something we have spent a considerable amount of time consulting and researching in 2019, we’re therefore well placed to advise on such matters and welcome any studios with concerns around IR35 to get in touch. We’ll be looking to further increase our scope of international services, whilst continuing to broaden our already diverse range of clients in London and the UK.

 
2019 has been a brilliant year. With a strong understanding of the sector's employment landscape, Chris advises companies on their project resource plans, reducing staff turnover levels and delivering greater profits from their projects.
